Because the best gifts warm both hearts and hands

There is something comforting about those easy-going, cozy mornings — the kind where you put your hands around a warm mug and take that first, yummy sip of your favorite beverage. Add a handmade gift to that simple pleasure — a soft, flannel or cotton mug cozy, handmade by you, that keeps the beverage warm and the heart even warmer.

If you have ever wanted to sew something simple, but meaningful — a gift that says “I thought of you” — this little project is a great place to start. Mug cozies are easy to make and customizable using their favorite themed fabric, such as a sports team, animal print or hobby inspired fabric. This little gift can be made in less than an hour. Whether you use scrap fabric you already have or themed fabric, the mug cozy will be sure to be a treasured gift that your friends and family will cherish.

In this post, you will go through the steps to create a simple, heart-warming flannel mug cozy — a gift that is not only personal, but practical, and made with kindness and caring. Whether the mug cozy is a gift for a neighbor, teacher, coffee buddy, friend or family, it is a small project that is made with a big heart and thoughtfulness.

Why Handmade Mug Cozies Make Thoughtful, Wonderful Gifts

A gift that is simple to make oftentimes holds the most meaning for the recipient.

This project is not just about keeping a drink warm, but rather it is a symbol of comfort, connection and caring.

This is what is so special about this project:

  • It is beginner-friendly. Simple straight seams, soft fabric from cotton or flannel, is an ideal project for new or advanced sewists.
  • It can be used all year-round. The cozy can be used for a hot or cold drink.
  • It is a heartfelt gift: For an added touch of kindness, a mug with their favorite tea bag or hot cocoa packet and a handwritten note gives extra special meaning to this gift.
  • It is a scrap-friendly project. Leftover flannel or cotton from a pajama project or quilt makes perfect material.

This is one of those projects that multiplies joy — a simple act of stitching that creates warmth in more than one way.

I have made these mug cozies as gifts for teachers, family and friends and they are always very much appreciated. Adding a mug and making a handmade coaster to match the mug cozy is an adorable gift set together with a few chocolates or a specialty tea or hot cocoa packet brings it all together for a thoughtful and warm-hearted gift.

A Few Helpful Tools and Choosing Your Materials

The joy in creating this project is that it is very simple, and yet shows that you care. Only a few supplies are needed and many of them you might already have.

You will need:

  • A piece of soft flannel or cotton fabric (about ¼ yard or a large scrap)
  • A piece of felt or cotton batting for insulation
  • Matching thread
  • One coordinating button and elastic hair tie or small elastic loop
  • Use a mug as the template
  • Basic sewing supplies — pins, needle, scissors, and iron

These are a few first sewing supplies that I love to recommend:

  • ✂️ Good fabric scissorsFiskars 8-inch shears are a reliable, beginner choice scissors that last for years. Be sure they are only used to cut fabric because cutting paper, etc. will dull them.
  • 🧵 A beginner-friendly sewing machineSinger Heavy Duty 4423 or the Brother CS5055 are both great for projects like this and for other projects around the home.
  • 📏 A seam gauge or quilting ruler — the ruler is used to accurately measure the fabric. A seam gauge is useful to make certain the sewing seams are even, but it is not absolutely necessary.

Personalizing a Mug Cozy

These are so easy to make so you might not be able to stop after making just one! You will soon be making dozens for gifts for teachers, friends, family and neighbors. Each mug cozy can be customized to reflect the personality of the person receiving the gift.

Try some of these personalized variations:

  • Classic plaid flannel for a rustic, wintery feel.
  • Bright cotton fabric for friends who love color.
  • Muted neutrals for a down-home, cozy, farmhouse look.
  • Embroider or add a patch — perhaps embroider the recipient’s initials, add small heart or a flower if they love gardening.
  • Mix textures — cotton on one side and flannel on the other for a cute, reversible mug cozy.

Adding little details will make your handmade gift extra special. Find joy and have fun customizing each cozy.

Step-by-Step: How to Sew a Fabric Mug Cozy

This is the section where you are ready to create a useful and beautiful gift. This project can be hand-sewn if you wish or do not own or have access to a sewing machine. If you have a sewing machine, but have been hesitant to use it, fear not because this is a beginner friendly sewing machine project. It is also a great project for quick and simple gift making for more advanced sewists.

Step 1: Make your template.
Get a mug and wrap a piece of paper around the mug from one side of the handle to the other – do not wrap the paper around the handle, but rather stop at each side of it. Mark the paper where the ends meet at the handle and at the top and bottom edges. Remove the template and add about ½ inch seam allowance all around the template, then cut the template on the ½ inch seam lines.

Step 2: Cut your fabric and batting.
If the front-outer and lining fabric of the cozy will be the same fabric, cut two pieces of each fabric from your cotton or flannel. If you want the front-outer fabric to be one color and the lining fabric to be a different color, then cut one pattern piece of each fabric color.

Felt or batting for the middle – cut one from template.

You should have 3 pieces cut from the template – TWO pieces of fabric: one for cozy front and one for lining and one piece of batting or felt.

Step 3: Layering the pieces and sewing.
Layer the pieces as follows: place the lining right side (pretty side) up.

Insert the elastic loop or hair tie on one short end of fabric

Place the outer fabric right side (pretty side) down on top of the lining fabric.

Add the batting on top of the stacked fabric and pin in place.
Sew around all sides with a ¼ inch seam, leaving a small opening for turning.

Step 4: Turning and pressing.
Start turning the mug cozy through the opening so it is right side out. You can use a pencil or chopstick to push the corners out while turning. Once turned right side out, iron and press flat. Be sure to tuck in the opening that towards the inside as left for turning and press well.

Step 5: Topstitching and finishing.
Topstitch all the way around the cozy being sure to stitch the opening closed and press again. This will give your gift a nice neat, finished appearance. Sew the button on the opposite side of the elastic loop.

Step 6: Test and enjoy!
Grab your mug and wrap the mug cozy around it looping the elastic over the button to hold it in place.

 Mug Cozy Finished

Congratulations. You have just finished a heartfelt, handmade gift in less than an hour.

A Warm and Thoughtful Gift Idea

Put together a gift set by adding personalization:

  • A mug cozy matching their favorite team, animal print, etc.
  • Add a special tea, coffee or packet of cocoa
  • Add a heartfelt, handwritten note — such as, “For happy mornings and warm hands.”
  • Add a cellophane bag with a few cookies in the mug to enjoy with their beverage.

This gift can be a “Cozy Morning Gift Set” — a handmade matching coaster, handmade mug cozy, and a tea bag tied together with simple twine bow. This heartfelt, simple gift is extra special because it is unique and not mass-produced.
