Have you ever felt that wrapping paper ends up being a waste because it is only used once and then tossed in the trash? We, as sewists, have the power to change the outcome. Wrapping presents in a handmade fabric gift bag becomes part of the gift itself. Made with care from the heart, simple gift bags turn the smallest present into something meaningful. Large gifts can be placed in a fabric gift bag made to size without worry of the wrapping tearing.

Fabric gift bags are a wonderful place to start for beginner sewists. Only straight stitches are needed together with some pressing and a willingness to use pretty fabrics and design options. One of the best things is that they are very fast to make and a great way to use up scraps or pre-cut bundles you might have on hand.

In a few easy steps, you will learn how to sew your very own fabric gift bags. They can be personalized to the recipient’s personality, child-themed fabrics or appliques or other thoughtful touches that say “you matter.”

Why Fabric Gift Bags Are So Meaningful

Sharing your time, creativity, and caring is part of giving your gift in a handmade bag. Little acts of thoughtfulness have an endearing quality that store-bought wrapping paper cannot match.

Here are a few reasons fabric gift bags are worthwhile:

  • Eco-friendly: No more wrapping paper destined for the landfill as it can be used over and over again.
  • Budget-conscious: Once you have your sewing supplies, each fabric bag costs pennies to make, especially when using leftover fabric or even repurposing fabric from fabric items you have in the home.
  • Personal: Fabrics can be selected that highlight the recipient’s personality, such as child-themed fabric, florals for the gardener, plaids, elegant solids, or whimsical prints.
  • Purposeful giving: A great way to use your sewing skills is to make these bags for charities. Foster care programs, shelters, and holiday gift drives appreciate sturdy, handmade packaging for the donated items.

Handmade bags given to friends and family may seem like a small gesture, but they oftentimes linger in their memory, reminding them, “You were worth my time.”

I was never a “happy wrapper,” meaning I despised wrapping gifts. I know, I know, that is a very unpopular attitude, but by the time I wrapped paper around the gift, unstuck the tape from itself, and finally got it taped together, one end or the other would be poking through the paper. Don’t even get me started on those odd-shaped gifts that would not fit into a box. Recycling fabric into gift bags was a perfect fit for me and less frustrating. It started when I impulsively purchased a lovely fabric shower curtain that matched absolutely nothing in my house. It was too long after the purchase to return it, so it sat around my house, making me feel guilty.

After attempting to wrap a rather large and very odd-shaped birthday gift without success, I laid eyes on the abandoned shower curtain and decided to finally put it to good use. Measurements were taken of the gift, fabric cut and sewn in less time than wrestling with the paper gift wrap again. The gift was tossed in the bag and the bag was tied with a simple twine wrap. The gift bag was a huge hit at the birthday party – almost as big a hit as the gift itself. Use your imagination and fun when making gift bags.

Choosing the Right Fabric and Supplies

Before you start sewing, read through the entire instructions and gather your materials. You probably have most of these items already.

You’ll need:

  • Fabric: Quilting cotton is easy to work with and looks beautiful. Linen or muslin will give the bag a more rustic look. A fat quarter (18” x 22”) is perfect for a small bag. You can even repurpose something you already have.
  • Ribbon or twine: For the tie or drawstring.
  • Basic sewing tools: Scissors, pins or clips, thread, and an iron.
  • Sewing machine: A reliable, beginner-friendly machine, such as the Brother GX37 or Singer Start 1304, both are easy to use starter models.

If you’re new to sewing, consider a pre-cut fat quarter bundle—they come in coordinating colors and save you the step of cutting large pieces of fabric.

If you don’t have a sewing machine, this project can also be done by hand using a simple running stitch. It will just take a little more time.

Creative Touches and Design Ideas

Once you have made a few basic bags, you will start personalizing and customizing the bags with variations. Some personalization ideas are:

  • Mix and match fabrics: Use contrasting prints or coordinating colors for the lining and exterior.
  • Add a tag: Embroider a heart with the recipient’s name or sew on a small patch with their initials.
  • Include a pocket: Everyone loves pockets. Tuck a handwritten note or small card inside the pocket.
  • Make sets: For a coordinated gift presentation, sew several different sizes. You could even have a different color, design, or theme for each recipient.
  • Seasonal flair: Gift bags can reflect the season or holiday. Plaids for Christmas, pastels for Easter, and Spring birthdays could be made in bright, cheerful florals.

Handmade gifts are from the heart and do not have to be perfect. Uniqueness only adds to its charm.

Step-by-Step: How to Sew a Simple Fabric Gift Bag

This method will make a bag about 8” tall by 6” wide. This bag is perfect for a mug, a small toy, or a candle. The measurements can be adjusted to fit the size of the gift.

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric

Cut one rectangle 16” wide by 9” tall.

  • Fold it in half with right sides (pretty sides) together so the folded piece measures 8” wide by 9” tall.
  • The fold will be the bottom of your bag.

Step 2: Sew the Side Seams with or without Drawstring Channel

If you’d like to make a drawstring closure (Optional)

  • Before sewing the side seams, fold the top edge down ½” and stitch along the edge to create a casing.
  • After sewing the sides, thread a ribbon or cord through with a safety pin.

If you do not want a drawstring channel closure:

  • With right sides together, stitch along both sides using a ½-inch seam allowance.
  • Backstitch at the start and end for strength.
  • Trim the corners slightly to reduce bulk.
  • Turn the top edge under ¼”, press, then fold down another ¾” and press again.
  • Stitch close to the folded edge to form a clean top hem.

Step 3: Turn and Press

  • Turn your bag right side out.
  • Give it a good press with a mini iron, using a wool pressing mat to protect surfaces. This is perfect for small projects, but a regular-sized iron and ironing board can be used.
  • You can use a piece of twine or cording to gather the top of the bag closed if you did not use a drawstring.

And that’s it! You’ve made a beautiful, reusable fabric gift bag.

Ideas for Using and Sharing Your Gift Bags

Once you start sewing these, you will find numerous ways to share them:

  • Family gifts: Use a different print for each person so their bags can be reused year after year.
  • Craft fairs: Offer sets of 3 or 5 bags tied with ribbon. They are great sellers during the holidays.
  • Charity donations: Fill bags with small toiletries, socks, or comfort items for shelters, hospital, or nursing home patients.
  • Eco-friendly wrapping: Encourage friends to “pass it on” by reusing the bag for their next gift.

Conclusion: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

There’s something deeply heartwarming about making something that you are proud to give. Sewing fabric gift bags is more than a craft. It is giving a part of yourself in an act of kindness. You are wrapping gifts in kindness and caring in every stitch and creating a keepsake that can be used and loved again and again or passed on.

Before reaching for the store-bought wrapping paper, pause and think: Could this be a moment to sew something special?

Even one small bag can remind someone that handmade still matters and that joy can live in the simplest of stitches.
